Who is Jon B.?

Jon B. was a jazz composer, producer, vocalist, and instrumentalist who focused on smooth melodies in contemporary R&B. Jonathan Buck (or simply Jon B.) was the son of a music professor and a concert pianist and was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, but grew up in Pasadena, California.

In his teens and early twenties, he immersed himself in the sounds of his grandparents’ record shop, which had a huge influence on him. He began combining the energy of ’70s soul music with hip-hop-inspired compositions on his 1995 debut album Bonafide, influenced by music from his grandparents’ store.

It made it to number 24 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart, fueled by the Top Ten R&B hit “Someone to Love,” a collaboration with Babyface, and went gold.

His second album, 1997’s Cool Relax, continued in the hip-hop soul vein and included two of his most popular songs, including “They Don’t Know” and the 2Pac-assisted “Are U Still Down.”

As a result, the album sold over one million copies and was certified platinum.
