Early Life of Mary Berry
Mary Berry was born on March 24, 1935, to Margaret (1905-2011) and Alleyne William Steward Berry (1904–1989), the second of three children.
Alleyne was a surveyor and planner who served as Mayor of Bath in 1952 and helped establish the University of Bath at Claverton Down.
Robert Houghton, Mary’s great-great-grandfather on her father’s side, was a master baker in the 1860s who supplied bread to a local workhouse in Norwich. Her mother passed away in 2011 at the age of 105.
At the age of 13, she was stricken with polio and spent three months in hospital. As a result, she has a twisted spine, a weaker left hand, and a thinner left arm.
She has stated that being stuck at home for several months while sick “hardened [her] up” and taught her to make the most of every opportunity she would have.
Berry was educated in Bath, where she reported that her academic abilities were “hopeless” until she took domestic science classes with a mentor called Miss Date, who was very encouraging of her culinary talents.
She made a treacle sponge pudding at home and claimed it was just as delicious as her mother’s.
Mary Berry Early Career
She began her career at the Bath Electricity Board display room and then conducted house calls to demonstrate to new customers how to use their electric ovens.
She would generally show the ovens by making a Victoria sponge, a practice she would repeat on television when testing out an oven she had never used before.
Her demonstration catchment area was restricted to the greater Bath region, which she drove around in a Ford Popular provided as a company car.
In 1970, her first cookbook entitled The Hamlyn All-Colour Cookbook was published. In 1994, she launched a product range with her daughter Annabel.
Rise to Stardom
Mary’s AGA cooking school originally offered just the salad dressings and sauces, but they have since been sold in Britain, Germany, and Ireland through stores such as Harrods, Fortnum & Mason, and Tesco.
She also has a KitchenAid mixer, which she says is the one gadget she could not live without in her own kitchen.
She enjoys watching Raymond Blanc’s restaurant, Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, as well as the Old Queen’s Head, which is located close to her home in Penn or High Wycombe.
