His father was a former heavyweight contender who fought Floyd Patterson for the world heavyweight championship and later served as the Massachusetts State Boxing Commission’s boxing commissioner for eight years.

Nancy, his mother, was a Miss America contender from New Hampshire.

Thomas McNeeley Sr., McNeeley’s grandfather, was a New England boxing champion who competed on the 1928 Olympic boxing team.

The fight with Mike Tyson

In the run-up to his bout with Mike Tyson on August 19, 1995, Peter McNeeley reveled in the spotlight. He had never been put in such a position before, and he took advantage of it.

Before the biggest fight of his life, he appeared on talk shows and gave several interviews. He was certainly collecting the highest payment of his life, with a salary of $700,000, while Mike Tyson was making a cool $25 million.

When the bell did sound that night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Peter McNeeley had to be commended for not backing down.
