Redman was kicked out of Montclair State University in his first year as a freshman due to poor academic performance at age 16. Redman had nowhere else to turn, so he went back home to live with his mother, Darlene Noble.

At the age of 18, Redman was a young DJ-MC known as “DJ Kut-Killa.” He freestyled over funk and hip hop instrumentals on vinyl records in parks and house parties across New York and New Jersey.

Redman’s first studio album, Whut? Thee Album (1992), featured a “taut, yet fluid rapping style” that blended reggae and funk influences with AllMusic noting it for “blending hip-hop and reggae flavors”.

Redman’s debut album, which was released in the summer of 1992, peaked at number 49 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold. Redman followed up this success with his 1994 album, Dare Iz a Darkside. Redman’s third studio album, Muddy Waters (1996), was met with considerable acclaim. Acting Career

In 2001, Redman starred in the stoner comedy How High alongside Method Man, who played two marijuana-addled students attempting to survive at Harvard. In a concert (at the Soundset in Minneapolis), Redman revealed that he and Method Man are working on How High 2, a sequel to the first film.

Redman appears in the Chucky horror film, as well as several other films and video games.
