Richard Paul Astley is a singer, songwriter, and radio personality. He became famous after his connection with the production trio Stock Aitken Waterma.

Early Life of Rick Astley

Rick Astley was born on 6th February 1966 in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, as the fourth child of his family. His parents separated when he was five. He was grown up by his father.

But, Astley remained in touch closely with his mother, who was a few blocks away from his father’s home. After knowing that, his father was kicked him out of his motherhouse.

So, he moves away from his father. His musical career began when he was 10, by singing in the local church choir. During his school days, he made and played the drums with local bands, where he come across guitarist David Morris.

After leaving school at sixteen, he worked throughout the day as a driver and played drums on the Northern club circuit at night.

He became specialized in covering Beatles and Shadows songs, and FBI, afterwards he won numerous local talent events.


In 1985, Astley was drumming for a soul group called FBI, in which Morris was also playing guitar in. They were a well-known local act that wrote and performed their own songs on the road.

When the band’s lead singer departed, and Morris moved on to pursue a career in hairdressing, Astley volunteered to be the vocalist. This was when he was discovered by record producer Pete Waterman, who persuaded him to move to London and work at the PWL recording studio with RCA Records.

Under the supervision of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman, better known as SAW (Stock Aitken Waterman), Astley was educated on the recording process and trained for his future profession, supposedly beginning in the recording studio “tea boy.”

Astley was hired as a “tape op” to overcome his timidity, according to the FBI. SAW also employed many of the FBI’s members, including Morris as a guitarist/songwriter.

Rise of His Success

His debut single, “When You Gonna”, was produced by Phil Harding and Ian Curnow and featured vocals from Lisa Carter.

“We were at a stage early on with Rick, when no one knew quite what to do with him,” recalled Harding. “The idea was to make him happen in the clubs… [but the song] opened up the doors for him at Capitol Radio.”

The song was released in May 1987, and because there was no promotion, it charted at No. 17 in the Netherlands and No. 20 in Belgium.

In November 1987, Whenever You Need Somebody became the UK’s and Australia’s first number-one album with four tracks penned by Astley. It was 2x Platinum in the US. The worldwide sales of Whenever You Need Somebody reached 15.2 million copies, making Astley the year’s top-selling British artist.

In December 1989, Astley launched his first worldwide tour, which visited 15 countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and Japan. He was weary of the bad publicity by the conclusion of the tour, and he wanted to try new things as a musician.

Stock Aitken Waterman and RCA Records purchased PWL’s contract with him.

In March 2005, Astley released Portrait, a collection of classic songs in which he tackled such well-known titles as “Vincent,” “Nature Boy,” and “Close to You.” Sony BMG was dissatisfied with the result, however, and so the album was given little promotion; yet it reached No. 26 on the UK Albums Chart.

By April 2008, Sony BMG had released an updated version of Rick Astley’s The Ultimate Collection: Rick Astley, which included two brand-new tracks. It debuted at #17 on the UK Top 40 Albums Chart and sold just under 15,000 copies in its first week.

In April 2016, Astley released “Keep Singing,” the first single from his upcoming 50th album. On the Lorraine show on 7 April, Astley said that turning 50 prompted him to release the song.

He said, “It was a big milestone. I got back in the studio and friends were telling me the material I was working on was pretty good. So I decided to go for it.”

On 5 June, it was announced that Astley’s 50 would be released on 10 June 2016. Between 17 and 23 June 2016, the album topped the Official UK Album Sales charts.
