It was the February of 2015 when his family and friends had reported that Steve Fonyo was in an induced coma in Royal Columbian Hospital.

This was done after being stabbed by three home invaders who did that crime at his residence in Whalley, which is a neighborhood of Surrey.

The severity of the case made doctors place him in a medically induced coma for a whole long month after the attack.

Steve Fonyo began his “Journey for Lives” marathon at the age of 18 on 31st March 1984. And had eventually completed it in a total of 425 days on 29th May 1985. Surprisingly, he had covered a total of 7,924 km.

Following which Steve Fonyo was named a Member of the Order of Canada. But that year only in 1985, he lost his father Steve Fonyo Sr., who died of lung cancer.

On December 7, 2010, Fonyo pleaded guilty to threatening Greenwood and to unrelated charges of fraud, credit card fraud, and driving with a suspended license.

Steve Fonyo was handed an 18-month conditional sentence in January in the 2000s.  after pleading guilty to several charges, including uttering threats against his new wife.

The Surrey resident, known for his historic run across Canada for cancer research in 1985, had been in custody since his arrest in November.

At the time, Lisa Greenwood, whom he married last August, said the two had gotten into an argument over money.

She didn’t want him charged, she said. However, by law, police are required to lay charges in domestic assault cases even if the alleged victim withdraws the complaint.
