He was sleep-deprived for nine days while suffering financially to care for his mother and three younger brothers after their mother left her alcoholic and violent second husband.

While not exceptionally quick, he was highly sure-handed and able to go wide open because of his route-running precision.

In 1978, he was the first Seahawk to be picked to the Pro Bowl, and he was chosen six more times during his career. He topped the league in receiving yards with 1,237 in 1979 and 1,287 six years later in 1985.

 Largent’s participation in the NFLPA strike terminated after the third and final week of the strike in 1987. With Charlie Joiner’s retirement the previous year, Largent became the NFL’s active leader in career receiving yards.

A position he held until his retirement in 1989. In Week 3 of 1988, he broke Joiner’s all-time receiving yardage record (12,146).

During the same season, he was struck by Mike Harden of the Denver Broncos, suffered a concussion, and lost two teeth. Largent tackled Harden and lost a fumble 14 weeks after Harden’s first interception.
